Uttarakhand Weather Update: Winds, Lightning Expected, Rainfall May Bring Relief From Forest Fires
Uttarakhand, a state nestled in the Himalayas, finds itself battling two contrasting forces: the hope for rain in some areas and the devastating reality of forest fires. While the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday predicts light rain or thunderstorms in parts of Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Pithoragarh, and Bageshwar districts, with a chance of showers in other areas, most of the state remains parched.
Current temperatures vary across the state, with Dehradun experiencing a warm 34°C and 32% humidity, while Tehri offers a cooler respite at 24°C and 43% humidity. Pantnagar and Almora share similar temperatures of 34°C, but differ in humidity (47% and 30% respectively), and Mukteshwar boasts a pleasant 23.1°C with 43% humidity.

Meanwhile, the scattered showers bring a glimmer of hope for controlling the rampant forest fires that have wreaked havoc across the state. These wildfires have tragically claimed five lives, with a recent victim, a 65-year-old woman, succumbing to her injuries at AIIMS hospital, according to an India Today report.
Uttarakhand Forest Fire: What are the contributing factors?
The Indian Air Force (IAF) has joined the fight, deploying an M-17 helicopter to assist firefighters in battling the flames. Air Marshal VPS Rana PVSM, VSM (Retd), has cautioned that human negligence, land clearing for agriculture, and insufficient rainfall are major factors (https://www.sdcuk.in/adding-fuel-to-the-fire/) fueling the fires. The flammability of pine needles and resin is exacerbating the situation.
Adding to the state's woes are a series of minor earthquakes, averaging around 2.5-3.0 on the Richter scale.
Data from the National Center for Seismology indicates nine such tremors occurred in March, followed by seven more recently. This morning itself, Uttarkashi district felt an earthquake measuring 2.6.

Another tragedy struck recently on the Purola-Mori road in Uttarkashi district. Strong winds caused a pine tree and a powerline to fall on a motorcycle, claiming the lives of two men identified as Prakash Chand Nautiyal and Shaahid.
Supreme Court Steps In
Meanwhile, aray of hope emerges as the Supreme Court is set to hear petitions regarding the forest fires on May 8th. This hearing could pave the way for crucial actions to ensure the safety of both the people and wildlife of Uttarakhand.
