Uttarakhand Sets Equality Template for India with Uniform Civil Code
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami recently shared insights into the adoption of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Uttarakhand, marking a significant move towards ensuring equality in personal laws across the state. During a felicitation event in Mumbai, Dhami articulated his vision that the UCC would serve as a catalyst for national unity, gender equality, and the cessation of discriminatory practices. This initiative positions Uttarakhand as the pioneering state post-Independence to implement the UCC, setting a precedent for legal and societal reform.

Dhami underscored the non-discriminatory nature of the UCC legislation, emphasizing its design to foster societal cohesion rather than target specific groups. He attributed the initiative's inspiration to the late Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, highlighting its potential to bridge societal divides and promote equal rights. The Chief Minister also touched upon the successful retrieval of approximately 5,000 acres of encroached land in Uttarakhand, showcasing his government's commitment to law enforcement and societal welfare.
The UCC's introduction in Uttarakhand has been met with optimism for its potential to eliminate gender-based discrimination and unify diverse communities under a common legal framework. Dhami elaborated on the rigorous provisions being formulated for the UCC's effective implementation, aiming for a transformative impact on the judicial system. The legislation received President Droupadi Murmu's assent on March 11, following its passage in the Uttarakhand Assembly on February 7, marking a historic moment for the state.
In preparation for the UCC's implementation, Dhami revealed plans to form a committee if re-elected, reflecting an inclusive approach by soliciting suggestions and engaging in discussions with various stakeholders. This strategy aims to enhance transparency and build trust among the populace regarding the UCC's benefits.
Addressing broader societal issues, Dhami highlighted his administration's efforts against land encroachment and illegal land acquisition practices, colloquially termed as 'land Jihad'. The state has enacted legislation to curb riots and religious conversions, demonstrating a proactive stance on maintaining social harmony and law and order.
The Chief Minister firmly believes that the UCC will pave the way for greater equality and justice within personal laws nationwide. By drawing on Dr B.R. Ambedkar's constitutional provisions, Dhami envisions a future where legal uniformity transcends caste, faith, or sect distinctions. Through these initiatives, Uttarakhand is not only addressing immediate legal and moral imperatives but is also laying down a foundational stone for national unity and gender equality.
