Uttarakhand Records 54% Voter Turnout in First Phase of Lok Sabha Elections
In the first phase of the Lok Sabha elections, Uttarakhand witnessed a voter turnout of over 54 per cent across its five parliamentary constituencies. This marks a decrease from the 2019 general elections, where the turnout was over 61.48 per cent. The state saw all its Lok Sabha seats go to poll in this initial phase, with a final voter participation rate of 54.22 per cent, excluding postal ballot data which is yet to be accounted for.

The Nainital-Udham Singh Nagar constituency recorded the highest turnout at 59.99 per cent, with Haridwar closely following at 59.12 per cent. Tehri Garhwal, Pauri Garhwal, and Almora constituencies saw lower participation rates of 51.74 per cent, 49.93 per cent, and 45.39 per cent respectively. A total of 55 candidates contested in this electoral round, which concluded peacefully despite some instances of poll boycotts in rural areas over developmental grievances.
Notably, eight villages in Chamoli within the Pauri Garhwal seat and several villages under the Almora constituency abstained from voting due to the absence of proper road connectivity. Despite attempts by local authorities to encourage participation, these communities stood firm on their decision.
Dehradun experienced an orderly polling process attributed to an increase in the number of booths, which alleviated crowding at stations. However, an isolated incident occurred in Haridwar where an elderly voter damaged an Electronic Voting Machine (EVM), leading to his temporary detention.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, along with family members, was among the early voters. He expressed optimism about the developmental progress in Uttarakhand over the past decade and voiced support for a third term for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Dhami also highlighted the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) commitment to implementing a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) across India, drawing parallels with Uttarakhand's legislative efforts.
Contrastingly, former Chief Minister Harish Rawat of the Congress party predicted a victory for his party across all five seats, attributing it to public desire for change. BJP's Haridwar candidate Trivendra Singh Rawat showcased confidence in securing the seat by a significant margin.
Prominent figures such as yoga guru Ramdev and his aide Acharya Balkrishna also participated in the electoral process, advocating for a vision of development and prosperity rooted in India's cultural heritage. Additionally, newlyweds and individuals with disabilities made their way to polling stations, underscoring the inclusive nature of the democratic exercise.
The election day unfolded smoothly across Uttarakhand with instances of enthusiasm and commitment towards civic duties evident among various sections of society. The state now awaits the final tally of votes as it concludes this crucial phase of the Lok Sabha elections.
