Uttarakhand CM Tables Uniform Civil Code Bill 2024 In State Assembly

Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami tabled the Uniform Civil Code Uttarakhand 2024 Bill in the State Assembly, in Dehradun, On Tuesday.

    Key Features of UK's UCC Bill 2024

    The key features of this bill were discussed by Union Minister for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal on Monday, emphasizing that the Uniform Civil Code is currently in the consultation process and being reviewed by the Law Commission of India.

    The consideration and review of this matter are part of the ongoing process by the Law Commission of India, as stated by Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, who highlighted that this issue was deliberated by the framers of the Constitution during its making, as reported by Mint.

    He mentioned that the states have the flexibility to fix or improve it, citing the example of the government of Goa which has already worked on the UCC. The approval of the UCC in the cabinet by the Uttarakhand government was noted, and it was mentioned that once the Law Commission provides a report, further information will be communicated.

    Additionally, a draft of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) was presented to the Chief Minister by a five-member committee led by retired Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai. The UCC, to establish a consistent legal framework for marriage, divorce, land, property, and inheritance laws irrespective of religious affiliation, was highlighted.

    The fulfilment of a significant promise made by the BJP during the 2022 Assembly polls is achieved with the passage of the UCC Bill.
