Uttarakhand's Push for Chardham Yatra Authority to Enhance Pilgrimage Experience
In a significant move to enhance the management of the Chardham Yatra and other pilgrimages in Uttarakhand, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has instructed officials to expedite the establishment of a dedicated authority. This directive was issued during a meeting on Wednesday, highlighting the growing influx of devotees and tourists to these sacred sites. The Chief Minister emphasized that the forthcoming Chardham Yatra Management Authority will oversee not only the Chardham Yatra but all pilgrimage activities within the state.

With the pilgrimage season in full swing, the Chief Minister noted a remarkable increase in visitor numbers, particularly at the Gangotri and Yamunotri Dhams, where attendance has doubled compared to the previous year. The 2023 Chardham Yatra, which commenced on May 10, has already witnessed over 21 lakh pilgrims visiting the four revered Dhams. Detailed figures reveal that Kedarnath Dham has attracted 8,22,019 devotees, Badrinath Dham 5,42,310, Yamunotri Dham 3,82,122, and Gangotri Dham 3,81,256.
Addressing concerns over the increased pressure on Rishikesh due to the surge in pilgrim numbers, Dhami proposed exploring Kotdwar in Pauri district as an alternative starting point for the Yatra. Currently centered around Rishikesh, the influx has led to significant traffic congestion in the area. This suggestion aims at distributing the flow of pilgrims more evenly across different routes to alleviate congestion and enhance the overall pilgrimage experience.
The establishment of a Chardham Yatra Management Authority signifies Uttarakhand's commitment to ensuring a well-organized and efficient pilgrimage process. By addressing both logistical challenges and the spiritual needs of devotees, the state aims to uphold the sanctity and significance of these ancient pilgrimages while accommodating their growing popularity among devotees worldwide.
