Uttar Pradesh rape-murder case: Opposition leaders demand swift justice after police file FIR and arrest suspect

Opposition leaders including Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and Akhilesh Yadav have called for swift justice in an alleged rape and murder of a teenage girl in Uttar Pradesh. They alleged administrative apathy and pressure on the family, while police said an FIR has been registered and the main suspect arrested.

Opposition leaders intensified demands for quick justice after the alleged rape and murder of a teenage girl in Ghazipur district. Police said an FIR was registered on the family’s complaint. Police also said the main accused was arrested. The case drew wider attention after political leaders alleged threats and administrative neglect.

Varanasi Additional Director General of Police Piyush Mordia visited the village on Friday with senior officials. Mordia said the girl was about 17 years old. Mordia said the girl went missing on the night of April 14. Mordia said the body was found in the Ganga the next morning.

Ghazipur case: Police details and investigation

Mordia said the body was recovered about 3 km away in Karanda police station limits. Mordia said, "Based on the information given by the family, an FIR was registered and the main accused has been arrested. Further investigation is underway.\" Mordia added the family sought a fast-track trial. Mordia also said the family expressed satisfaction with police action.

Police said a murder case was registered, even as the post-mortem suggested drowning. Police also said early findings pointed to a possible suicide angle. Police cited a prior relationship between the deceased and the main accused. Relatives and local residents continued to seek speedy justice since the recovery on April 15.

Ghazipur case: Political reactions from Congress

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday said the victim belonged to the Vishwakarma community. Rahul Gandhi claimed the girl was raped and brutally killed. Rahul Gandhi also alleged the family was threatened to stop an FIR. Rahul Gandhi called for action against guilty police officers and security for the family.

In a post on X, Rahul Gandhi said, \"Why are daughters so unsafe under the BJP rule? In such circumstances, justice is not asked for, it is snatched,\" while urging a high-level probe. Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also criticised the administration. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said atrocities against women were at their peak in Uttar Pradesh.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra wrote on X, \"In the case of the murder of a girl in Ghazipur, the reluctance to register a case initially, then threats to the victims family and chaos created by goons, show that atrocities against women are at their peak in the state. Under the BJP rule, it has become an unwritten law that whenever a woman faces atrocities, the victim is harassed further.\"

Ghazipur case: Samajwadi Party statements and visit plan

SP president Akhilesh Yadav told reporters at the party headquarters that BJP leaders met the girl’s father. Akhilesh Yadav said, \"The BJP seeks to extract political mileage from every situation. However, I am heartened to see that society at large is becoming increasingly aware and the PDA pichhda or backward classes, Dalit, alpsankhyak or minority is even more vigilant,\"

Later on X, Akhilesh Yadav alleged a pattern under the BJP government. Akhilesh Yadav said they first commit or arrange atrocities. Akhilesh Yadav said pressure then follows to change statements. Akhilesh Yadav wrote, \"Exploiting the helplessness of a poor person constitutes the most inhumane form of injustice. The BJPs governance and administrative machinery are currently passing through their most abysmal phase,\"

Akhilesh Yadav also demanded, \"An inquiry must be conducted to identify these specific BJP people who, under the guise of offering counsel, are actually exerting pressure and doing so in the direct presence of the police.\" Akhilesh Yadav sought another probe into police personnel. Akhilesh Yadav alleged intimidation and false charges against supporters.

At the party office, Akhilesh Yadav said party members wanted to visit only for justice. Akhilesh Yadav said, \"We are going there to facilitate the delivery of justice. We all have faith in the judiciary.\" Akhilesh Yadav added that the visit would not happen if the father refused.

The Samajwadi Party said on Friday that a delegation led by the party president would visit on April 29. The announcement came as the political focus widened in Uttar Pradesh. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was also scheduled on April 29. The visit was planned for Hardoi, to inaugurate the Ganga Expressway.

Ghazipur case: Stone-pelting incident and arrests

The situation escalated on April 22 during a Samajwadi Party delegation visit. Police said stone-pelting broke out in the village. Several people were injured, including police personnel. Police said 10 people were arrested in connection with the attack. Akhilesh Yadav earlier alleged village leaders and dominant forces backed it.

Mordia warned against attempts to disturb peace in the village. Mordia said, \"After this incident, some political parties and external elements tried to create unrest in the village and attempted to instigate the family by presenting unrelated facts. I request that this should not be done,\" Mordia said strict legal action would follow for any effort to vitiate the atmosphere.

The case remained under investigation, with competing claims and continued public attention. Police maintained that an FIR was filed and an arrest was made. Opposition leaders kept pressing for faster action and accountability. The planned April 29 visit by the SP delegation was expected to focus on the family’s grievances and demands for justice.
