UP News: From Support to Self-Reliance: Kanya Sumangala Yojana Transforming Lives

The Uttar Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, funds the Mukhyamantri Kanya Sumangala Yojana to empower girls through education and financial support. Since 2019, it has reached millions of girls, with staged payouts tied to educational milestones, illustrating the scheme's role in promoting gender equality and long-term self-reliance.

The Uttar Pradesh government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, is making sustained and focused efforts to promote the welfare, dignity and empowerment of girls through multiple flagship initiatives. The Mukhyamantri Kanya Sumangala Yojana stands out as a strong reflection of the government’s commitment to the belief that daughters are a source of strength, not a social burden.

Through this ambitious scheme, the lives and futures of nearly 2.7 million girls across the state are being positively transformed. The programme aims to promote gender equality, prevent female foeticide and encourage a progressive social outlook towards the birth, education and upbringing of girl children.

Since its launch, the Mukhyamantri Kanya Sumangala Yojana has benefited around 2.7 million eligible girls, with the state government disbursing a total of ₹647.21 crore. These figures highlight the extensive reach and effective implementation of the scheme, demonstrating that it goes beyond policy announcements and delivers tangible benefits at the grassroots level. The scale of disbursement reflects strong administrative commitment and a transparent delivery mechanism.

The state government has ensured continuous budgetary support for the scheme. In the current financial year alone, financial assistance worth ₹130.03 crore has been provided to 3.28 lakh beneficiaries. This sustained investment underlines the government’s long-term vision for the welfare, education and self-reliance of girls. Today, the scheme has emerged as a key pillar in strengthening social security and equal opportunities for daughters across Uttar Pradesh.

Promoting Gender Equality Through Inclusive Support

Launched in 2019, the scheme is designed for girls belonging to economically weaker families who are permanent residents of Uttar Pradesh. Eligibility criteria include an annual family income of up to ₹3 lakh and a maximum of two children per family. By linking financial assistance with educational milestones, the initiative ensures that economic constraints do not hinder a girl’s education or overall development, while also motivating families to invest in their daughters’ future.

Enhanced Financial Assistance Builds Confidence

In the financial year 2024–25, the state government enhanced the total financial assistance under the scheme from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000. This assistance is provided in six structured stages, encouraging girls to continue their education at every level:

• ₹5,000 at the time of birth
• ₹2,000 on completion of vaccination at the age of two years
• ₹3,000 on admission to Class 1
• ₹3,000 on admission to Class 6
• ₹5,000 on admission to Class 9
• ₹7,000 on passing Class 10 or 12 and securing admission in a diploma, graduation or long-duration degree course

By combining financial support with educational progression, the Kanya Sumangala Yojana is playing a decisive role in shaping a future where daughters are empowered, educated and self-reliant, contributing meaningfully to society and the state’s development.
