Uttar Pradesh Government Initiates Judicial Probe into Hathras Stampede
A retired judge from the Allahabad High Court, Brijesh Kumar Srivastav, will lead a three-member judicial inquiry commission. This commission was established by the Uttar Pradesh government to investigate the Hathras stampede incident, as per an official statement.

The commission is expected to complete its investigation within two months. It will examine whether the incident was an accident or a conspiracy and evaluate the crowd control measures implemented by the district administration and police. Additionally, it will suggest preventive measures to avoid such incidents in the future.
Focus on Crowd Control and Law Enforcement
Retired IAS officer Hemant Rao and retired IPS officer Bhavesh Kumar will join Srivastav on the commission. The formation of this commission came a day after the incident, following directions from Governor Anandiben Patel. The commission will scrutinise the arrangements made by local authorities for crowd management and law enforcement during the event.
The official statement highlighted that the commission would investigate whether the organisers complied with the permissions and conditions set by the district administration. This includes examining if any lapses occurred in adhering to these conditions.
Investigating Possible Conspiracy
Another critical aspect of the investigation is determining if there was any planned criminal activity behind the incident. The commission will explore various angles to ascertain if it was an accident or a deliberate act.
The tragic stampede at a religious gathering on Tuesday resulted in 121 fatalities and 28 injuries. The commission's findings will be crucial in understanding what led to this disaster and how similar incidents can be prevented in the future.
The inquiry will also delve into the reasons and circumstances that caused the stampede. By doing so, it aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of all factors involved.
In addition to investigating compliance with permissions, the commission will assess crowd control measures. It will look into how effectively these measures were implemented by both district administration and police forces during the event.
The recommendations from this commission are expected to help in formulating strategies to prevent such tragedies. These suggestions will be aimed at improving safety protocols for large gatherings in Uttar Pradesh.
The establishment of this judicial inquiry reflects a significant step towards accountability and transparency. It underscores the government's commitment to ensuring public safety at large events.
