US Imposes 50% Tariffs On Indian Imports, Jaipur Traders Express Deep Concern

The recent US-imposed tariffs on Indian imports have triggered anxiety among traders in Jaipur, particularly in the gems, jewellery, and garment sectors. Raju Mangodiwala, president of the Jaipur Jewellery Association, warned that the move could significantly affect the industry, which exports goods worth Rs 11-12 lakh crores annually to the United States.

Speaking to ANI on Wednesday, Mangodiwala expressed hope that the Union Government would intervene to mitigate the impact. "Trump's tariffs will affect India, especially the gems and jewellery sector. There is a palpable sense of fear among businesspeople in this trade. Still, I trust Prime Minister Narendra Modi will find a solution. The Jaipur-to-US gems and jewellery trade, valued at 11-12 lakh crores, will face serious challenges. However, opening trade routes to Russia or other countries could help offset the impact," he said.

Garment traders have echoed similar concerns. Zakir, a garment businessman, noted that sustaining operations without the US market has become extremely difficult. He explained that goods previously costing USD 1 million are now USD 166 million more expensive, which will heavily affect business viability.

The 50% tariffs on Indian imports took effect on Wednesday, following a draft notice from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). The duties were implemented under President Trump's Executive Order 14329, dated August 6, 2025, titled "Addressing Threats to the United States by the Government of the Russian Federation."
