UPI Hits Record Milestone: Over 15,500 Crore Transactions Processed In 2024
The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has reached a major milestone, processing 15,547 crore transactions worth Rs 223 lakh crore from January to November 2024, according to the Finance Ministry. The figures were shared by the ministry in a social media post on X, formerly known as Twitter, accompanied by the hashtag #FinMinYearReview2024, underscoring the growing prominence of UPI.
UPI has become an essential part of India's digital economy, facilitating easy and instant transactions. The platform is currently operational in seven countries, including major markets like the UAE, Singapore, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, France, and Mauritius. This highlights the expanding international footprint of India's digital payment system.
Launched in 2016 by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), UPI has revolutionised the country's payment system by enabling users to link multiple bank accounts to a single mobile platform. This has allowed seamless transactions, from instant money transfers to merchant payments and peer-to-peer transfers. UPI's efficiency and ease of use have significantly contributed to India's transition towards a cashless economy.
According to the Money Control report, in October 2024, UPI processed a record 16.58 billion financial transactions, totalling Rs 23.49 lakh crore. This represents a remarkable 45 per cent growth compared to October 2023, when UPI processed 11.40 billion transactions. The increasing volume of transactions on UPI highlights the platform's growing adoption and its central role in reshaping India's financial landscape. With such rapid growth, UPI is set to continue driving India's digital economy forward in the coming years.
