UPI Goes Global: Indian Users Can Now Pay On Foreign Sites via PayPal

Indian users can now make payments on international e-commerce sites using UPI, following a strategic partnership between global payments giant PayPal and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). This development comes just a month after PayPal Payments Pvt Ltd-PayPal's Indian subsidiary-received in-principle approval from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to operate as a Payment Aggregator-Cross Border-Exports (PA-CB-E).

UPI Goes Global via PayPal World

Announced on Wednesday, the integration of Unified Payments Interface (UPI) into PayPal's new global platform, PayPal World, will enable seamless cross-border payments. The platform aims to connect many of the world's largest digital wallets and payment systems-including Venmo and now UPI-under one umbrella.

According to PayPal, launch partners for PayPal World collectively represent nearly two billion users worldwide. The company said the new platform will transform how people send money and shop online or in-store, even when assisted by AI agents.

PayPal President and CEO Alex Chriss said, "The challenge of moving money across borders is incredibly complex, and yet this platform will make it so simple for nearly two billion consumers and businesses."

NPCI International Payments Ltd MD & CEO Ritesh Shukla added, "The integration of UPI on PayPal World marks a significant step in expanding UPI's global footprint. This collaboration enhances convenience for Indian users and enables global merchants to tap into India's growing digital payments ecosystem."

The partnership allows Indian consumers to use UPI for transactions with global merchants, expanding both accessibility and payment flexibility in international e-commerce.
