UPA's minorities move: Full funding of pre-matriculation scholarships

upa
New Delhi, Feb 27: In order to woo the minority communities ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, the UPA government changed its partial scholarship program for pre-matriculation students to full sponsorship.

The partial sponsorship scheme was implemented last year after much difficulties. In May 2013, the Supreme Court refused to place a stay order on the scheme when the Gujarat government alleged that it was discriminatory.

Although applicable in all the states, the scheme is restricted to students belonging to 5 religious minorities whose parents have an annual income less than 1 lakh.

Currently, the centre provides 75% of the education expenses and the state is to make up for the 25%.
