The locals first saw the bodies floating in the river and alerted the administration about the same. They have also alleged that district officials initially ignored these dead bodies as they didn't want to conduct the last rites of the decaying bodies.

The district administration has now started collecting the bodies and perform last rites. But it is still is clueless whether the bodies are of men or women.
"I've received the information that dead bodies are floating on the banks of river Ganga. I've ordered an investigation into the matter. Last rites of the dead bodies will be performed soon," Unnao SDM Saryu Prasad Shukla told reporters.
The sanitation workers have refused to take out the bodies from the river as they are in a very bad shape, an officer said.
A team of doctors led by Chief Medical Officer Geeta Yadav is taking forensic sample of the bodies. The DM said that as per the opinion of the doctors post mortem was not possible, instead sampling was being done for DNA testing.
