UP riot rapes: Arrest warrants out against 22

, Jan 22: A Muzaffarnagar court has issued non-bailable warrants against 22 rape accused, allegedly involved in 5 separate incidents of gang-rape in riot-hit UP. The order was passed after the Special Investigation Team (SIT) identified 22 out of the 27 accused and sought the court for issuing arrest warrants.

Separate investigations are being done on five other persons, involved in another case of gangrape. The SIT petitioned for the arrest warrant of the accused after the Apex Court issued notice to the state government and the Centre, based on a writ petition by six women who were gangraped in Phuguna village in Muzaffarnagar during the riots.

Narender Kumar, the Chief Judicial Magistrate, issued the arrest warrant against the 22 accused, who are still on the run.
