UP Government Moves to Erase Caste from Police Records: A Historic Step Against Discrimination

In a landmark move following a scathing verdict from the Allahabad High Court, the Uttar Pradesh government, under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has ordered the complete removal of caste references from police records, official documents, public spaces, and government vehicles. The directive signals a bold attempt to dismantle entrenched caste biases within the state machinery.

Court Slams Caste Mentions as "Legal Fallacy"

The September 16 order from the Allahabad High Court left little room for debate, calling the practice of noting caste in FIRs and arrest memos "a legal fallacy" that threatens the very essence of constitutional democracy. The court highlighted examples like FIRs listing Mali, Pahadi, Rajput, Thakur, Punjabi Parashar, and Brahmin-insisting that such labeling serves no lawful purpose and reflects deep insensitivity.

"Rather than initiating departmental inquiries or educating officers about constitutional morality, the authorities defended this practice on flimsy grounds," the court said. It urged both state and Union governments to take decisive action to eradicate caste prejudices from official procedures.

Government Orders and Implementation

Acting swiftly, Chief Secretary Deepak Kumar instructed all state departments to eliminate caste references from police documents, vehicles, noticeboards, and public displays. For identification, only the names of a person's parents can now be used. Police manuals and SOPs will be updated to ensure strict adherence.

Exemptions and Realities

The only exceptions are cases under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, where caste information remains relevant for legal purposes. Still, experts say this historic directive marks a turning point in India's battle against caste-based discrimination, challenging decades of bureaucratic inertia.
