UP Family Murder: Main Accused Arrested Following Illicit Relationship Fallout

The primary suspect in the tragic shooting of a Dalit school teacher, his wife, and their two young daughters was apprehended on Friday. Officials have stated that the incident stemmed from a failed illicit relationship. Chandan Verma, the main accused, was captured near a toll plaza in Noida while heading to Delhi, according to Superintendent of Police Anoop Kumar Singh.

Sunil Kumar, aged 35 and a government school teacher, along with his 32-year-old wife Poonam and their daughters Drishti and Suni, were shot dead in the Ahorwa Bhawani area of Amethi on Thursday. The investigation revealed that Poonam had filed a complaint against Verma in Raebareli on August 18 under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Prevention of Atrocities Act, 1989, also citing eve-teasing.

Confession and Motive

Singh disclosed that Verma confessed to the murders, admitting to an affair with Poonam lasting 18 months. The relationship soured, leading him to shoot the family. Verma reportedly fired ten shots from a pistol. When questioned about a social media post predicting five deaths, Singh explained that Verma intended to kill himself after the family but failed in his suicide attempt.

During a press conference, Singh mentioned that Verma is from Raebareli district. He allegedly went to the victims' home and became enraged for unknown reasons before shooting them. The police are investigating further to understand what triggered this violent act.

Political Reactions

Following the incident, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed condolences to the victims' relatives. Meanwhile, opposition parties criticised the BJP government over the state's law-and-order situation. The case has sparked political debate regarding safety and governance in Uttar Pradesh.

The complaint filed by Poonam had warned that if anything happened to her or her family, Verma should be held accountable. This adds another layer of complexity to the case as authorities continue their investigation into this tragic event.
