UP Engineer Dies By Suicide In Etawah After Alleging Harassment By Wife, In-Laws: 'Throw My Ashes In Drain'

A 33-year-old engineer from Etawah in Uttar Pradesh has died by suicide after alleging harassment by his wife and in-laws.

Mohit Yadav recorded a video before his death, in which he accused his in-laws of making threats and filing false cases against him.

"If I don't get justice even after my death, throw my ashes into the drain," he said in the recording.

Yadav had checked into the Jolly Hotel near Etawah railway station on Thursday. He did not emerge from his room the following morning. By the evening, hotel staff discovered him hanging, confirmed Abhay Nath Tripathi, Superintendent of Police (City).

A native of Auraiya district, Yadav was employed as a field engineer with a cement company. He and his wife, Priya, had been in a relationship for seven years before marrying in 2023.

In the video, Yadav alleged that Priya, who had been pregnant, took up a private teaching job in Bihar two months ago, but her mother coerced her into having an abortion. He further claimed his mother-in-law kept all her daughter's jewellery. Yadav maintained there had been no dowry demands during their marriage, yet his wife threatened to falsely implicate his family.

"My wife threatened me that if I didn't register my house and property in her name, she would implicate my family in a dowry case. Her father, Manoj Kumar, filed a false complaint, and her brother threatened to kill me," Yadav said in the video. He also claimed that following the complaint, his wife began quarrelling with him regularly and that her family backed her in doing so.

He also reflected on the lack of legal protection for men against allegedly false accusations by women. "By the time you get this video, I will be gone from this world. I wouldn't have taken this step if there were a law for men. I couldn't tolerate the harassment by my wife and her family," he said.

According to his brother, Tareen Pratap, Yadav had been en route to Kota but had stopped in Etawah. The family were devastated upon receiving his video on Friday morning.

A response from Priya Yadav and her family is still awaited.

This case echoes a series of similar tragedies, including the suicide of Bengaluru techie Atul Subhash last year, who too had accused his wife of lodging false complaints against him - a case that galvanised men's rights activists across the country.
