UP elections: 168 candidates with criminal background in fray

Out of the 836 candidates contesting the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, 302 are crorepatis.

Lucknow, Feb 4: There are 168 candidates with criminal cases contesting the first phase of the Utta Pradesh assembly elections 2017. An analysis by the Association for Democratic Reforms states that there are 836 candidates in the fray.

143 candidates have declared serious criminal cases, including cases related to murder, attempt to murder, kidnapping, crimes against women etc. 15 candidates have declared cases related to murder.

168 candidates with criminal cases in UP

Meanwhile, 42 candidates have declared cases relating to attempt to murder. Five candidates have declared cases including assault or criminal force against women. Two candidates have declared cases related to kidnapping for ransom, etc.

Financial strength of candidates

Out of the 836 candidates, 302 are crorepatis. BSP has fielded 66 crorepati candidates while the BJP has 61 such candidates. The SP and Congress have fielded 40 and 18 crorepati candidates respectively.

The average of assets per candidate contesting in the first phase of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections is Rs 2.81 Crores.

The average asset per candidate is Rs 13.18 crore where the Congress is concerned. In the case of the BJP, it Rs 7.40 crore and for the BSP it is Rs 6.77 crore. The average assets in case of the SP candidates is Rs 5.98 crore.

Parvez Ali, an independent candidate from Thana Bhawan constituency has declared zero assets.
