SP-Cong Alliance Surpasses BJP in UP, Winning 43 of 80 Seats
In a surprising turn of events, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) faced a setback in Uttar Pradesh during the recent elections, securing only 36 seats. This result stands in stark contrast to the INDIA bloc's performance, which won 43 seats, marking a significant shift in the political landscape of India's most populous state. The outcome is particularly notable given that in the 2019 general elections, the BJP and its ally Apna Dal (S) together won 64 out of 80 seats, with the BJP alone securing 62.

The Samajwadi Party (SP), under Akhilesh Yadav's leadership and representing the INDIA bloc in Uttar Pradesh, emerged as the single largest party by winning 37 seats. The BJP's tally fell to 33 seats. The Congress party, allied with SP, succeeded in winning six seats, including the historically significant constituencies of Amethi and Rae Bareli. Within the NDA, Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) managed to win two seats, while Apna Dal (S), led by Anupriya Patel, secured one seat.
Despite an intense campaign spearheaded by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who won his Varanasi seat with a margin of over 152,000 votes, the BJP could not maintain its stronghold in Uttar Pradesh. SP chief Akhilesh Yadav shared on X that this election result has paved a new direction for the country, emphasizing it as a triumph for constitutional democracy and social justice over divisive politics. He highlighted this victory as a testament to the unity of the INDIA coalition and PDA (Pichada, Dalit, and Alpasankhyak).
Chandrasekhar Azad's Aazad Samaj Party won a single seat, while Mayawati's Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) failed to secure any seats. The BJP's allies, Om Prakash Rajbhar-led SBSP and Sanjay Nishad faced defeats in their respective constituencies. Dimple Yadav, Akhilesh Yadav's wife, won from Mainpuri.
The Congress party made significant gains by defeating Union Minister Smriti Irani in Amethi and securing Rae Bareli through Rahul Gandhi. These victories are particularly noteworthy as both constituencies are considered strongholds of the Congress party. Despite efforts to capitalize on the grand temple consecration at Ayodhya earlier this year, the BJP did not win the Ayodhya seat. The party had criticized SP and Congress for their stance on the Ram temple consecration event.
Senior BJP leaders including Prime Minister Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had extensively campaigned in Uttar Pradesh. However, their efforts did not translate into electoral success in several key constituencies. Notably, the BJP lost Sultanpur and Lakhimpur Kheri seats, represented by Maneka Gandhi and Union Minister Ajay Mishra Teni respectively. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh retained his Lucknow seat, which he has held since 2014.
BJP's Ravi Kishan secured victory in Gorakhpur, a constituency closely associated with Adityanath who represented it five times previously. Actors Hema Malini and Arun Govil achieved wins in Mathura and Meerut respectively.
This election outcome signals a significant shift in Uttar Pradesh's political dynamics. The results reflect voter sentiment and priorities at this juncture, underscoring a move towards prioritizing social justice and constitutional values over divisive politics. The performance of various political parties in these elections will likely have far-reaching implications for future political alignments and strategies in India.
