Two days after clashes following stone-pelting on a motorcycle rally that was taken out to celebrate the Republic Day, the Uttar Pradesh police said that the situation is under control now.
However, internet services have been suspended till 10 pm on in trouble-torn areas in western UP, where a curfew was imposed after clashes, to prevent the spread of rumours on social media.
Speaking to ANI, Sanjeev Kumar, IG said,''The situation is under control now. Accused have been identified and are going to be nabbed soon, one country made bomb and pistol also recovered from residence of one of the accused.''
Meanwhile, raids have been conducted at the residence of an accused in connection with Kasganj Clashes.
On Saturday, the violence flared up after the cremation of a local resident who was killed in clashes on Republic Day. Shops at Ghantaghar were burnt down and private buses parked on Nadrai Gate were set on fire.
Chandan Gupta, a 23-year-old resident, was killed in the firing, while a youth named Naushad suffered a bullet wound in his leg. He is getting treatment at an Aligarh hospital.
At least 49 people were arrested, borders sealed, schools closed and internet services blocked to check the spread of rumours, district magistrate RP Singh said as the administration stepped up efforts to restore peace.
Additional policemen were deployed to prevent flare-ups and stop miscreants from entering the town.
Deputy chief minister Keshav Prasad Maurya and state urban development minister Suresh Khanna condemned the violence and said strict action will be taken against those found guilty.
