UP: Azam Khan Convicted In Hate Speech Case Against PM Modi, Yogi Adityanath
Former MP of Samajwadi Party Azam Khan has been convicted for making derogatory comments against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. He has been sentenced to two years in jail.
Khan faced prosecution under Section 171 G, Section 505 (1) B, and Section 125 of the Representation of the People Act. The case was registered against him at Shahzad Nagar police station in Rampur for delivering a provocative speech during the Lok Sabha elections in 2019 when he was a candidate from the SP-BSP alliance.

Previously, the Rampur Additional Superintendent of Police, Sansar Singh, confirmed that the Y-category security provided to Khan, a ten-time MLA from Rampur, had been withdrawn following a directive from the security headquarters in Lucknow. This category of security entailed three gunmen and round-the-clock security personnel stationed at Khan's residence. All the security personnel have been called back to the police lines in Rampur.
Khan, who won the Rampur assembly seat in the 2022 Uttar Pradesh polls for the tenth time, resigned from the Lok Sabha after assuming the MLA position. In October 2022, the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly Secretariat announced Khan's disqualification from the House, a day after he received a three-year jail sentence in a hate speech case.
