Mani Shankar Aiyar Questions Whether Pahalgam Tragedy Reflects Unresolved Issues of Partition

During a book launch event, Mani Shankar Aiyar, a seasoned Congress leader, questioned if the Pahalgam incident was linked to unresolved issues from the Partition. He highlighted the ongoing challenge of whether Muslims in India feel accepted and valued. Aiyar noted that despite efforts to prevent Partition, it occurred due to differing views on India's identity among leaders like Gandhi, Nehru, and Jinnah.

Aiyar Questions Partitions Role in Pahalgam Tragedy

Aiyar reflected on the aftermath of Partition, questioning if current events like the Pahalgam tragedy are echoes of those unresolved issues. On April 22, terrorists killed 26 people, mostly tourists, at Baisaran meadow in Pahalgam, south Kashmir. This incident has raised concerns about the lingering impact of historical divisions.

Partition's Legacy and Pakistan's Role

The Congress leader also discussed Pakistan's ambition to be the guardian of Muslims in the subcontinent. This vision ended after Bangladesh's independence in 1971. Aiyar explained that over half of Pakistan's population and significant territory separated because being Muslim wasn't enough; they also identified as Bengali.

Aiyar elaborated that Pakistan's failure to recognize the multifaceted nature of identity led to its downfall in 1971. The dream of being a homeland for Indian Muslims and a protector for Muslims across the subcontinent was shattered permanently.

Identity and Acceptance in Modern India

Reflecting on pre-Partition times, Aiyar posed a crucial question: how should India address its Muslim population? He questioned whether they should be seen as a separate nation or as integral members of Indian society. This debate continues to influence India's identity today.

Aiyar further questioned if Muslims in India feel accepted, cherished, and celebrated. He urged people to seek answers from Muslims themselves rather than relying on assumptions. "Why should I answer my own questions? Ask any Muslim and you will get the answers," he stated.

In conclusion, Aiyar's reflections highlight ongoing challenges related to identity and acceptance in India. The Pahalgam tragedy serves as a reminder of unresolved issues from the past that continue to affect the present. Addressing these concerns is crucial for fostering unity and understanding within the nation.
