United Front: Congress Aims To Avoid Past Mistakes In Maharashtra Election Strategy
The Congress party, keen to strengthen its position in Maharashtra ahead of the upcoming elections, is taking lessons from its missteps in Haryana. Learning from the intra-party conflicts and the failure to present a united front, Congress appears to be determined to avoid a repeat performance by building a stronger, more cohesive alliance in Maharashtra. With the stakes high, the party is opting for a collaborative strategy alongside allies like the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Shiv Sena (UBT) and even Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
In Haryana, Congress struggled due to internal disputes and factionalism, ultimately leading to disappointing results. This time around, party leaders are focused on avoiding clashes with the leadership of the NCP and Shiv Sena (UBT), both key allies in Maharashtra.

The Maharashtra political landscape has been turbulent, with defections, alliances and breakaways, making it essential for Congress to maintain unity within the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition.
The Congress has realised that projecting a chief ministerial candidate too early can backfire, as it often leads to divisions and ego clashes within the party. Learning from the Haryana debacle, the party has decided not to name a face for the chief minister's post in Maharashtra.
This move is designed to prevent internal competition and infighting, fostering a spirit of collective leadership. Instead, the focus will be on presenting a united front and fighting the elections as a cohesive unit, prioritising the collective success of the alliance over individual ambitions.
Rahul Gandhi and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge are expected to hold a crucial meeting with Maharashtra Congress leaders in the coming days. The agenda will likely include discussions on how to strengthen the MVA alliance, as well as preventing any infighting that could weaken their prospects in the state. Leaders from all coalition partners are expected to participate in talks aimed at creating a comprehensive election strategy.
The Congress party's decision to work more closely with AAP, despite earlier friction, is another indication of its intent to build a broad, inclusive alliance. In the current political climate, no party can afford to go it alone, and Congress seems to have realised the importance of unity. The goal now is clear: to present a united, disciplined front that can challenge the BJP-led government in Maharashtra.
By avoiding past mistakes and focusing on alliance-building, Congress is working to ensure that it does not fall into the same traps that cost it dearly in other states. The upcoming elections will be a crucial test of whether these lessons have been truly learned.
