Union Health Minister JP Nadda Urges Public To Remain Calm Amid HMPV Scare: 'No Reason To Worry'

Union Health Minister JP Nadda on Monday addressed public concerns regarding Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), emphasising that it is not a new virus and urging citizens to remain calm. He noted that the virus, first identified in 2001, has been present worldwide for several years.

Responding to growing apprehensions and social media discussions, Nadda released a video statement, reassuring the public that the government is closely monitoring the situation and implementing all necessary measures to safeguard public health.

"Health experts have clarified that HMPV is not a new virus. It was first identified in 2001, and it has been circulating across the globe for many years. HMPV spreads through the air via respiration and can affect people of all age groups. The virus tends to spread more during the winter and early spring months," JP Nadda explained.

Nadda's statement came shortly after three infants in Karnataka and Gujarat tested positive for HMPV. Seeking to allay fears, the senior BJP leader confirmed that the Union Health Ministry is well-prepared to address any potential rise in respiratory illnesses.

HMPV, a globally recognised respiratory virus, has recently garnered attention following an outbreak reported in China. It is known to cause respiratory infections in individuals of all age groups.

The Health Minister further highlighted that a review of respiratory virus data from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the Integrated Disease Surveillance Program (IDSP) has not indicated any significant surge in respiratory viral infections in India.

"The country's health systems and surveillance networks remain vigilant to ensure a prompt response to any emerging health challenges. There is no reason to worry. We are closely monitoring the situation," Nadda reassured the public.
