Dharmendra Pradhan Convenes Meeting with Interim VCs Amidst Ongoing Controversy in West Bengal
Amid the controversy over appointments of interim vice-chancellors, they meet Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The meeting is aimed at discussing academic issues and improving the higher education system.
On September 14th, a critical gathering took place in Kolkata involving several interim vice-chancellors of state universities who were recently appointed by West Bengal Governor C V Ananda Bose. The meeting was convened by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and held at a city hotel. This assembly comes amidst an ongoing dispute between the Raj Bhavan and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government over the appointments of these officiating vice-chancellors.

The programme was designed to foster dialogue among the central minister, vice chancellors, and university authorities on pertinent academic issues. As per a BJP leader's statement, this meeting served as an open interaction with academicians and stakeholders in the higher education system, aiming at its improvement.
Participants
The list of attendees included notable figures such as Soma Banerjee, VC of West Bengal University of Teachers Training; Education Planning and Administration; Santa Dutta, interim VC of Calcutta University; Rathin Banerjee, North Bengal University's interim VC; and Susanta Chakraborty, interim VC for Vidyasagar University.
Previous Meetings
This recent convocation follows another significant meeting that occurred just one week prior. That previous meeting involved registrars from 31 universities and was arranged by the state higher education department. However, only 12 registrars could attend due to threats preventing their participation while 19 others were unable to partake.
This series of meetings highlight the importance being placed on higher education within West Bengal currently. The discussions aim not only to resolve any disputes but also enhance academic standards across all state universities through collaborative efforts between key stakeholders in academia.
A Move Towards Improvement
The involvement of high-ranking officials like Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan signifies the central government's commitment to higher education. Such meetings provide a platform for open dialogue and brainstorming, creating an opportunity for improving academic standards, policies, and practices. The presence of interim vice-chancellors from various universities further suggests that these discussions are being taken seriously at all levels.
In conclusion, this meeting marks a significant step towards resolving ongoing disputes between the Raj Bhavan and TMC over the appointment of officiating VCs. Moreover, it also underscores the collective efforts being made by authorities to improve the quality of higher education in West Bengal state universities. As stakeholders continue to engage in constructive dialogue about academic issues, there is hope that such collaborative efforts will yield positive results in terms of enhancing educational standards across all institutions.
