India's indigenous Tejas fighter jet crashed during a flying display at the Dubai Air Show on Friday afternoon, resulting in the death of the pilot, the Indian Air Force confirmed. The incident has drawn renewed attention to the aircraft's features, capabilities and history.

1. Design and Variants

Tejas is primarily a single seat fighter, although the Air Force uses a twin seat trainer version. The Navy also operates the twin seat variant. Its development milestone includes the first test flight of Technology Demonstrator 1 in 2001, while the maiden flight of the Second Series Production aircraft in the Initial Operational Clearance configuration took place on March 22, 2016.

2. Payload and Weight Capacity

The aircraft can carry a payload of up to 4,000 kilograms. It functions as a single pilot, single engine fighter with a maximum takeoff weight of 13,300 kilograms.

Tejas belongs to the 4.5 generation category of multi role fighter jets. It is designed for offensive air operations and is capable of providing close combat assistance during ground missions.

The first IAF unit to induct Tejas was the No 45 Squadron, known as the Flying Daggers, in 2016. Tejas is the smallest and lightest combat aircraft in its class. Its compact dimensions and widespread use of composite materials contribute to its reduced weight.
