Umakant Dash Takes Office as New Vice-Chancellor of Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics

Dr Umakant Dash has been named the new Vice-Chancellor of the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics (GIPE) in Pune. He will begin his five-year term on July 29, 2025. The position had been unfilled since economist Ajit Ranade resigned in November 2024. Dr Shankar Das is currently serving as the interim Vice-Chancellor.

Umakant Dash Named New VC of Gokhale Institute

The Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics, established in 1930 by the Servants of India Society, is a significant academic institution in India. Founded by freedom fighter Gopal Krishna Gokhale in 1905, the institute has a rich history. It is recognised as the oldest research and training centre for economics in the country.

Institute's Historical Significance

The institute's legacy is deeply rooted in socio-economic research within Indian society. Over the years, it has built a strong reputation for empirical and analytical research. The GIPE website highlights its dedication to continuing Gokhale's legacy through its work.

In recent months, GIPE has faced challenges, including controversies over the chancellor's position and an arrest related to alleged fund misappropriation. Despite these issues, the institute remains committed to its mission of advancing economic research.

Legal and Academic Status

GIPE operates under the Societies Registration Act of 1860 and the Bombay Public Trusts Act of 1950. In 1993, it was granted the status of a deemed university, further solidifying its role in higher education and research.

The institute's focus on socio-economic dimensions makes it a pivotal player in understanding India's economic landscape. Its contributions to research have been significant over the decades, maintaining its status as a leading academic institution.

With Dr Umakant Dash's appointment, GIPE looks forward to continuing its tradition of excellence in economic research and education. The institute aims to overcome recent challenges and strengthen its position as a premier research centre.
