UIDAI Asks Parents To Update Aadhaar Biometrics For Children Aged 5-7 – Here’s How To Do It

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has issued a reminder for parents of children aged 5 to 7 to update their Aadhaar biometrics at the earliest.

In its advisory, the UIDAI stated that biometric updates for children under 7 are free of cost at Aadhaar enrolment centres. However, if the update is delayed beyond the age of 7, the authority may cancel the Aadhaar number, and a fee of ₹100 will apply for late updates.

UIDAI Asks Parents To Update Aadhaar Biometrics For Children Aged 5-7 Here s How To Do It

Why is This Update Important?

The UIDAI emphasized that "Aadhaar with updated biometric facilitates ease of living and ensures seamless usage of Aadhaar in availing services such as school admissions, registering for entrance examinations, availing benefits of scholarships, DBT (Direct Benefit Transfer) schemes, etc wherever applicable."

It further advised, "Parents/ guardians are advised to update biometrics of their children/wards in Aadhaar, on priority."

Why Wasn't This Done Earlier?

The UIDAI clarified, "The fingerprints and iris biometrics of a child are not captured for Aadhaar enrolment below the age of five because these are not mature at that age."

To streamline the process, the UIDAI has started sending SMS alerts to registered mobile numbers linked to children's Aadhaar, urging parents to complete the Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU).
