The Abhishek Chaubey-directed movie is in the middle of a censorship row and while its makers are battling with the board, political parties have alleged that Nihalani acted under the direction of the state government.

A new supporter has joined the bandwagon who is condemning 'Udta Punjab' controversy and that is actress Alia Bhatt. Alia took it to Twitter and said this in connection with the controversy:
Sharing Malala Yousafzai's quote, "We realise the importance of our voices only when we are silenced" , she gave support to the Udta Punjab team.
The producers of the movie have now moved to the Bombay High Court.
It is not for the first time that Nihalani has locked horns with filmmakers over censorship issues. He has been at the center of controversy since his appointment at the beginning of the last year.

He has been facing opposition from within the board and from Bollywood.
