Udhampur-Baramulla Rail Link Completion Expected to Enhance Kashmir Connectivity by January

The Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project is nearing completion, potentially connecting Kashmir to the rest of India by rail next month. A senior railway official confirmed this development on Tuesday. The final tunnel work in the Reasi area is expected to finish soon, paving the way for this significant connectivity milestone.

Kashmir Rail Link Operations to Start Soon

General Manager of Northern Railway, Ashok Verma, shared that the last tunnel, previously known as T-1 and now referred to as T-33, is almost done. "The project will be completed very soon. We are hopeful of the connectivity in January. Then all trains including Vande Bharat will run and a timetable will be framed for all the trains. We hope to start this project in January," Verma stated.

Railway Connectivity and Infrastructure

The completion of this rail link is anticipated to transform the situation in Kashmir significantly. Verma highlighted that the track-laying work has been finished, and electrical installations are currently underway. These tasks are expected to conclude within a week, followed by a crucial inspection by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) in the next 15 days.

Once these steps are completed, train operations will commence, marking a new era of connectivity for Kashmir. The 3.2-km T-33 tunnel at Vaishno Devi's foothills connects Katra to Reasi. This marks the completion of the final 17-km stretch between Katra and Reasi, enabling direct train services from Kashmir to Delhi.

Impact on Kashmir's Connectivity

Verma also visited several railway stations across the Valley to review operations and assess ongoing infrastructure development. This project is expected to bring about a significant change in Kashmir's connectivity landscape, facilitating easier travel and transport across regions.

With these developments, Kashmir is set to experience enhanced accessibility and integration with other parts of India. The introduction of trains like Vande Bharat will further boost connectivity and convenience for travellers.

The USBRL project represents a major step forward in improving transportation links in the region. As work progresses towards completion, anticipation builds for the positive impact it will have on local communities and economies.
