UCC, Madrasa autonomy to be focus of Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind at key meet

New Delhi, Feb 09: The Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind (JUH), which is an organisation of Islamic scholars are likely to discuss and pass a resolution on the Uniform Civil Code (UCC).

The JUH will organise its plenary session at Ramlila Ground here on Sunday.

Apart from UCC, the plenary would also discuss issues such as Madrasa autonomy and reservation for economically and socially backward Muslims.

This is the 34th plenary of the JUH and scores of Muslim clerics and community leaders from across the country. The representatives of the NGOs and prominent social activists will also attend the session.

The organisation will also hold a general session on February 10 and 11 before the plenary and it would host nearly 10,000 prominent Muslim clerics who constitute the national governing body of the JUH. They would deliberate on the resolutions to be passed by the plenary session on Sunday.

"The focus would be on inter-community and intra-community cohesion, specifically in the context of hate campaigns being launched to create social and communal divide," a notification by the JUH read.

What is Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind:

The Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind or JUHis an Islamic organisation in India which was established in 1911. Headquartered in Delhi, the JUH is made up of Islamic scholars and religious leaders. Their aim is to promote Islamic teachings, culture and education. The JUH also works for the social, economic and political empowerment of Muslims in India.

The JUH has been politically active in India since it came into being. It has taken positions on various political issues. In recent times the JUH has been involved in political debates. While the organisation has not aligned any particular party, it has supported certain political movements and candidates that it believes will be beneficial for the Muslim community.

The Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind has faced criticism for communalism. It has been accused by critics of taking positions that are divisive and harmful to India's social fabric. It has also faced criticism for its stance on women's rights and its opposition to certain reforms aimed at empowering women. The JUH has been accused of promoting outdated and a conservative approach to education and resisting reformed aimed at modernising the education system.
