Turkey’s Military Aid to Pakistan: A Deepening Axis Against India?

In a development raising strategic concerns for India, Turkey has reportedly dispatched military cargo aircraft to Pakistan, delivering combat equipment amid rising tensions following the Pahalgam terror attack. Six Turkish C-130 transport planes landed in Pakistan, signaling a clear reinforcement of Islamabad's defense capabilities. This move, although alarming, is not surprising considering the historical and ideological convergence between Turkey and Pakistan, especially when it comes to opposing India on international platforms.

Turkey s Military Aid to Pakistan A Deepening Axis Against India

Turkey's tilt towards Pakistan has deep roots in political Islam and shared geopolitical ambitions. Under President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Turkey has increasingly positioned itself as a self-proclaimed leader of the Muslim world, often adopting an anti-India stance, particularly on the sensitive issue of Kashmir. Ankara's repeated attempts to internationalise Kashmir - be it through speeches at the United Nations or during Islamic summits - echo Pakistan's narrative almost verbatim. Both nations have found common cause in acting against India's growing global influence, especially in forums involving Islamic nations.

This axis, however, becomes more complex when viewed in the context of India's evolving relationships with the broader Muslim world. Since Prime Minister Narendra Modi's first term, India's outreach to Muslim-majority countries has been strategic and successful. A landmark moment came when the then late External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj was invited as the Guest of Honour at the 2019 OIC (Organisation of Islamic Cooperation) meeting - a first for India despite Pakistan's strong objections. This was a significant diplomatic breakthrough, showing India's growing acceptance even among nations traditionally seen as aligned with Pakistan.

Today, India enjoys robust ties with the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, and even Indonesia - relationships built on economic partnerships, energy cooperation, and growing defense dialogue. Modi's personal diplomacy, characterised by high-profile visits and cultural outreach, has redefined India's engagement with the Muslim world beyond religious identities, focusing instead on mutual growth and regional stability.

In contrast, Pakistan's narrative of using "Islamic solidarity" to corner India has steadily lost steam. Turkey, therefore, remains one of the few Islamic nations still vocally backing Pakistan against India. The current military assistance from Turkey to Pakistan should be seen as part of this ongoing alignment, aimed at reinforcing a diminishing strategic front against a rising India.

Adding to the situation is China's continued military partnership with Pakistan. Over 82% of China's recent arms exports have gone to Pakistan, strengthening Islamabad's conventional and strategic capabilities. With Turkey now joining the fray more openly, a new defense corridor seems to be emerging - one that runs from Beijing to Ankara through Islamabad.

However, India's diplomatic resilience remains robust. New Delhi's partnerships with major Islamic powers, its voice in multilateral organisations, and its economic clout act as strong counterbalances to these strategic moves. India's assertive yet pragmatic foreign policy ensures that moves like Turkey's will not derail its broader global trajectory.
