Trangenders get equal rights, SC recognises 'Third Gender'

Trangenders
New Delhi, April 15: In a Supreme Court verdict today, the Supreme Court finally recognised the Transgenders as the 'Third Gender' bestowing them equal rights and opportunities.

The apex court, in its verdict, has directed the Central and the State governments to treat them as socially and economically backward classes.

The authorities have also been asked to provide them reservations in jobs, right to education and medical facilities.

While pronouncing the order, the court stated that the status of the transgenders has "degenerated" and that the time had come for their upliftment at par with the male and female.

Terming this judgement as socially progressive, senior lawyer Colin Gonsalves said that this day was to be remembered as a victory for those who have been fighting for equality.
