Four Dead as Torrential Rains Strike Kerala, IMD Issues Red Alert

Torrential rains have wreaked havoc across several parts of Kerala, leading to the unfortunate demise of four individuals. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has escalated its warnings, issuing a red alert for five districts anticipated to bear the brunt of heavy rainfall. The districts under this highest level of alert include Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, and Idukki. This development comes as the state grapples with the adverse effects of the downpour, with the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) confirming the casualties in various rain-related incidents.

Kerala Rains: 4 Dead, Red Alert in 5 Districts

The IMD's classification system for alerts is based on the expected rainfall within a 24-hour period. A red alert signifies heavy to extremely heavy rain exceeding 20 cm, an orange alert indicates very heavy rain ranging from 11 cm to 20 cm, and a yellow alert is for heavy rainfall between 6 cm and 11 cm. Currently, Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad are on orange alert, suggesting very heavy rain is expected, while Kannur and Kasaragod are on yellow alert for heavy rainfall.

Ernakulam district, particularly parts of Cochin city corporation, experienced significant flooding following Wednesday evening's heavy rainfall. The sudden deluge led to waterlogged houses and major roads in Kochi, while Thrissur city saw inundation in its low-lying areas. In response to the severe weather conditions, the KSDMA has advised fishermen against venturing into the sea until further notice.

Authorities have also forecasted high waves ranging from 0.4 to 3.3 metres along Kerala's coast from Vizhinjam in the south to Kasaragod in the north until Thursday night. In light of the continuous heavy rains, a state control room has been established within the Health Department Directorate to bolster epidemic prevention efforts. Health Minister Veena George highlighted that the control room aims to coordinate various activities under the Health Department and assist health workers and the public with their concerns.

The situation in Kerala underscores the critical need for preparedness and swift response mechanisms in the face of natural disasters. As the state navigates through these challenging times, the efforts of local authorities and emergency services remain pivotal in mitigating the impact of such severe weather events.
