Top 5 Milestones for Indian Railways in 2024
In a significant development, the Indian Railways has achieved a new milestone in 2024 by completing electrification of 7,188 km of railway lines, averaging an impressive 14.5 km per day. This accomplishment marks a step up from the previous fiscal year's 6,565 km, underscoring the Railways' commitment to enhancing operational efficiency and sustainability. This effort is part of a series of reforms introduced this year, designed to modernize and improve the railway infrastructure across the country.
Another landmark achievement is the completion of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, which stands as a historic milestone. This project not only symbolizes the technological and engineering prowess of the Indian Railways but also holds significant strategic importance by providing a rail link to the various regions of Jammu and Kashmir with the rest of India. The final track work on this project was heralded by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw as a "historic milestone."

The introduction of several Vande Bharat express trains this year has further bolstered the Indian Railways' portfolio, with these trains now operating on over 40 routes nationwide. These include services tailored for festive and winter seasons, offering passengers enhanced comfort and speed. The Railways' efforts to upgrade and expand its services reflect its dedication to improving passenger experience and operational capabilities.
In addition to these advancements, the Railways (Amendment) Bill, 2024, aims to grant more autonomy to railway zones, thereby improving their operational efficiency. The construction of India's first vertical lift sea bridge, the New Pamban Bridge, which replaces the century-old Pamban Bridge, underscores the commitment to modernizing infrastructure and enhancing connectivity.
India's first Hyperloop test track, spanning 11 km with a 410-metre segment at the Discovery Campus of IIT Madras, represents a forward-looking approach to transport technology. This collaboration between IIT Madras's Avishkar Hyperloop team and startup TuTr signifies an innovative leap towards future transport solutions.
Phase I of the USBRL project, the Qazigund-Baramulla section, was first inaugurated in October 2009, with subsequent phases opening up new sections and completing the electrification of critical segments. The recent electric train trial run from Banihal to Khari to Sangaldan on the Banihal-Katra section of the USBRL project marks a significant step towards full operationalization.
The Indian Railways' achievements in the past year, from completing major electrification milestones to introducing high-speed trains and completing strategic infrastructure projects, reflect a transformative phase aimed at enhancing efficiency, connectivity, and sustainability. These efforts not only contribute to the country's growth but also set a new benchmark for innovation and progress in the railway sector.
