Top 10 Government Jobs That Dominated Application Counts In 2024 – See Where The Crowd Is Heading
As 2024 approaches its conclusion, government jobs in India remain one of the most sought-after career options. These roles offer attractive salaries, job security, and a range of additional perks. Each year, millions of aspirants compete for these positions, and 2024 was no exception. Jagran Josh shared a report of the top 10 government jobs that received the highest number of applications. Following is the list:
1. BPSC Combined Competitive Exam (4.8 Lakh Applications)
The Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) conducts the Combined Competitive Exam (CCE) to recruit candidates for various administrative roles. In 2024, approximately 4.8 lakh candidates applied. The selection process includes three stages: prelims, mains, and an interview. The preliminary syllabus focuses on general knowledge and current affairs, with subjects like Indian history, politics, geography, and economics.
2. IBPS Probationary Officer (PO) Exam (5.5 Lakh Applications)
The Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) conducts the Probationary Officer (PO) Exam annually. In 2024, around 5.5 lakh aspirants applied. The selection process involves prelims, mains, and an interview. The prelims test candidates on their English language, numerical ability, and reasoning skills.
3. UPPSC Provincial Civil Service Exam (5.7 Lakh Applications)
The Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC) conducts the Provincial Civil Service (PCS) Exam to fill administrative positions in the state. This year, about 5.7 lakh candidates applied. The selection process comprises prelims, mains, and an interview. The prelims include two papers: General Studies (GS) and the Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT).
4. IBPS Clerk Exam (7 Lakh Applications)
The IBPS Clerk Exam, another popular banking sector examination, attracted approximately 7 lakh applicants in 2024. The recruitment process includes two stages: prelims and mains. The prelims test covers the English language, numerical ability, and reasoning ability.
5. NDA & CDS Exams (11 Lakh Applications)
The National Defence Academy (NDA) and Combined Defence Services (CDS) Exams, conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), received 11 lakh applications in 2024. These exams recruit candidates for roles in the Indian Armed Forces. The NDA Exam tests mathematics and general ability, while the CDS Exam evaluates candidates in English, general knowledge, and elementary mathematics.
6. UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) (13 Lakh Applications)
The Civil Services Examination (CSE) conducted by UPSC saw 13 lakh applicants this year. The exam recruits for prestigious positions such as IAS, IPS, and IFS. The selection process consists of prelims, mains, and an interview. The prelims include two papers: General Studies (GS) and CSAT.
7. SSC Combined Graduate Level (CGL) Exam (30 Lakh Applications)
The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) conducts the Combined Graduate Level (CGL) Exam to fill positions in various government departments. In 2024, 30 lakh candidates applied. The exam includes two tiers: Tier 1 and Tier 2, testing reasoning, general awareness, quantitative aptitude, and English comprehension.
8. SSC Combined Higher Secondary Level (CHSL) Exam (36 Lakh Applications)
The SSC CHSL Exam, aimed at candidates who have completed higher secondary education, received 36 lakh applications in 2024. The selection process involves two tiers: Tier 1 (objective type) and Tier 2 (objective/skill test). The Tier 1 exam covers general intelligence, general awareness, quantitative aptitude, and English language.
9. RRB Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP) Exam (47 Lakh Applications)
The Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) conducted the Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP) Exam, which saw 47 lakh applications in 2024. The selection process involves multiple stages, including two computer-based tests (CBT), an aptitude test, and document verification. Key subjects include mathematics, mental ability, general science, and general awareness.
10. UP Police Constable Exam (50 Lakh Applications)
The UP Police Constable Exam, conducted by the Uttar Pradesh Police Recruitment and Promotion Board (UPPRB), received the highest number of applications in 2024, with over 50 lakh aspirants. The selection process includes a written test, a Physical Efficiency Test (PET)/Physical Standards Test (PST), medical tests, and document verification. The written exam evaluates candidates in general awareness, general Hindi, numerical ability, and reasoning skills.
