To appoint Lokpal, PM, CJI, LoP to meet on March 1, SC told

Assuring the Supreme Court on the appointment of a Lokpal, the Centre said a meeting to deliberate on the issue had been fixed for March 1.

The issue had been hanging for long and on the last date of hearing the court had said that there was no justification in keeping the enforcement of the Lokpal Act suspended.

The court was informed by the Attorney General of India, K K Venugopal that a meeting was scheduled on March 1. He said that the meeting would comprise the Prime Minister, Chief Justice of India and leader of the largest opposition party.

The court is hearing a petition filed by an NGO seeking the immediate appointment of a Lokpal. The NGO Common Cause had argued that even though the Lokpal Bill was passed by Parliament in 2013 and came into effect in 2014, the Lokpal was not being appointed by the government deliberately.

It said the amendments proposed to the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act 2013, and the views of the Parliamentary Standing Committee, were attempts at streamlining the working of the Act and does not constitute legal hindrances or bars its enforcement as it stands today.
