Tamil Nadu CM Appeals to PM Modi for Exemption from NEET

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin has once again called for the state to be exempted from the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) for medical college admissions. In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Stalin argued that the selection process for professional courses should rely on 12th standard marks instead of a separate entrance exam, which he described as an unnecessary burden on students.

TN CM Seeks NEET Exemption

Stalin highlighted that Tamil Nadu had already passed a Bill in its Legislative Assembly to exempt the state from NEET and to base medical admissions on 12th standard marks. This Bill has been sent for Presidential assent, but approval is still pending. He noted that irregularities during the recent NEET exam further validated the state's opposition to this system.

Support from Other States

The Chief Minister also mentioned that other states have begun expressing their concerns about NEET. In separate letters to his counterparts in Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Punjab, Telangana, and West Bengal, Stalin urged them to consider passing similar resolutions in their assemblies to abolish NEET.

"Considering the importance and seriousness of the issue, I request you to consider passing a similar resolution in your state Legislative Assembly also to urge the Union Government to abolish the NEET exams in the interest of the students of our states," Stalin said in his letter.

Legislative Actions

On Friday, the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly passed a unanimous resolution urging the Union Government to provide its assent to the Bill for exempting Tamil Nadu from NEET. The resolution also called for amendments to the National Medical Commission Act to eliminate this selection process at the national level.

Stalin emphasised that many states are now voicing their views on the need to do away with NEET. "The irregularities during the recent NEET exam validated the state’s opposition to it," he said.

In his letter to Prime Minister Modi, Stalin reiterated that professional course selections should be based solely on 12th standard marks. He argued that a separate entrance exam adds unnecessary stress on students and is not needed.

The Chief Minister's appeal comes amid growing discontent among various states regarding NEET. The call for exemption and reform reflects a broader concern about student welfare and educational fairness across India.

Stalin's efforts aim to build a coalition of states advocating for changes in how medical college admissions are conducted. By seeking support from other state leaders, he hopes to create a unified front against NEET.

The ongoing debate over NEET highlights significant issues within India's education system. As more states join Tamil Nadu in questioning this entrance exam, there may be increased pressure on the Union Government to reconsider its stance.

The Tamil Nadu government's push for exemption from NEET underscores a larger movement towards educational reform. The outcome of this initiative could have far-reaching implications for students across India.
