TN CM launches tree plantation drive

Chennai, Feb 14: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today kickstarted a massive tree plantation drive that would witness the planting of 68 lakh tree saplings across the state as part of her 68th birthday celebrations.

The government has taken up a massive tree planting programme aimed at increasing the green cover across the state. Soon after the AIADMK government came to power in 2011, it had been conducting such tree plantation drives every year ahead of the Chief Minister's birthday, which falls on February 24.

Jayalalithaa launched the programme by planting a banyan tree sapling at a function, an official release said. The drive is expected to be completed by December.
