TMC's Shatrughan Sinha and Kirti Azad Secure Wins in Lok Sabha Polls
In a significant political development from West Bengal, actor-turned-politician Shatrughan Sinha, representing the Trinamool Congress (TMC), emerged victorious in the Asansol Lok Sabha seat, as officially announced by the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Tuesday. Sinha managed to secure a win against his closest competitor, S S Ahluwalia of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with a notable margin of 59,564 votes. The TMC leader amassed a total of 6,05,645 votes compared to Ahluwalia's 5,46,081 votes.

Another notable victory for the TMC was achieved by cricketer-turned-politician Kirti Azad in the Bardhaman-Durgapur Lok Sabha seat. Azad defeated Dilip Ghosh of the BJP by an impressive margin of 1,37,981 votes. The final tally showed Azad with 7,20,667 votes against Ghosh's 5,82,686 votes. These victories underscore the TMC's strong performance in the region.
Shatrughan Sinha attributed his win to the leadership of Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal and TMC supremo. "This is Mamata Banerjee's win. I will try my best to address the issues in the constituency," Sinha stated during a press interaction. He had previously expressed confidence in Banerjee's influence and the TMC's dominance in Bengal politics.
The Asansol Lok Sabha constituency has been a focal point due to its mix of unresolved challenges, including unemployment and inadequate access to drinking water. This area encompasses seven assembly constituencies: Pandabeswar, Raniganj, Jamuria, Asansol Dakshin, Asansol Uttar, Kulti, and Barabani in Paschim Bardhaman district.
Sinha's victory marks his continued representation for Asansol in Parliament. He had previously won a by-poll in this constituency in 2022 with a substantial margin against BJP's Agnimitra Paul after the seat became vacant. The vacancy arose following Babul Supriyo's resignation from his BJP post to join the Trinamool Congress.
The outcomes from Asansol and Bardhaman-Durgapur are indicative of the political landscape in West Bengal and reflect the electorate's response to both local and national issues. These results also highlight the shifting dynamics within Indian politics, showcasing the influence of prominent personalities transitioning from various fields into political arenas.
