TMC Student Wing Day: Mamata Banerjee Honors Kolkata Rape-Murder Victim

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee dedicated the foundation day of the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMC's student wing) to the 31-year-old trainee doctor who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital earlier this month.

Expressing profound grief, Banerjee called the incident deeply saddening and emphasized the importance of addressing such tragedies, on August 28.

In her message posted on X (formerly Twitter), Banerjee expressed heartfelt condolences and highlighted the crucial role of student organizations in fostering societal and cultural awareness. She urged students to stay committed to their roles in shaping a better future.

The incident has drawn significant scrutiny towards Banerjee, with demands for her resignation coming from students, doctors, and BJP leaders. The recent 'Nabanna Abhijan' rally, held to protest the rape-murder, saw clashes between police and protesters. Despite being labelled "illegal" by authorities, the rally led to violence, with police using tear gas and lathi-charges to disperse the crowd. Over 200 people were arrested in connection with the unrest, as reported by Hindustan Times.

Amid the chaos, the BJP has called for a 12-hour 'Bangla Bandh' to protest the police action during the rally. The bandh, which began at 6 am, has caused disruptions across the state, with demonstrations occurring at key railway stations like Bongaon, Gocharan, and Murshidabad, as per media reports.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken over the probe into the rape-murder case. The body of the trainee doctor was discovered on August 9, and the main suspect, Sanjay Roy, was arrested shortly after. The CBI has conducted polygraph tests on Roy and several others connected to the case, including former RG Kar Medical College principal Sandip Ghosh and other individuals.
