Tata Institute of Social Sciences Lifts Ban on Progressive Students Forum Following Student Advocacy

The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) has lifted the ban on the Progressive Students Forum (PSF-TISS), according to a statement by the student group. The PSF claimed that their collective efforts led to the reversal of the ban, which was imposed last month. This decision marks a significant moment for student activism within the institute.

TISS Lifts Ban on Progressive Students Forum

In an unusual development, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), affiliated with the RSS, expressed support for the PSF. TISS had previously accused the PSF of engaging in activities that disrupted the institute's operations and harmed its reputation. The institute warned that any future unauthorised events by PSF would face immediate action.

Student Rights and UGC Guidelines

The PSF argued that banning them contradicted University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines, which promote student organisations. They emphasised that such restrictions could set a worrying trend where university administrations impose unreasonable limitations on students, potentially overriding constitutional rights.

Historically, the PSF has experienced conflicts with TISS administration. They believe that limiting students' democratic rights undermines critical thinking and societal evaluation, essential elements of a leading social science institution like TISS.

The PSF stated, "Restricting the democratic rights of students sets a dangerous precedent wherein university administrations could put unreasonable restrictions on students that supersede even the Indian Constitution." They further highlighted that such actions oppose the core values of critical analysis and societal critique that TISS should nurture.

The lifting of the ban is seen as a victory for student activism at TISS. It underscores the importance of maintaining open dialogue and allowing diverse student voices within academic institutions. This development may influence how other universities handle similar situations in the future.
