Tihar Inmates Products Outlet: A Symbol of Hope and Transformation

Delhi Lt Governor V K Saxena inaugurates an outlet selling products made by Tihar Jail inmates, supporting their rehabilitation and reintegration into society.

Tihar Inmates Products: A Second Chance at Life

In a significant step towards the rehabilitation and reintegration of prisoners, Delhi Lt Governor V K Saxena inaugurated an outlet selling products made by Tihar Jail inmates at a petrol pump in the capital on Tuesday. The Convenio Store, a joint initiative of the Delhi Prison Department and the Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), aims to provide a platform for inmates to showcase and sell their products, fostering equality and bridging the gap between the prison and society.

A Symbol of Hope and Transformation

Lt Governor Saxena emphasized the importance of reintegrating prisoners into the mainstream after their time in jail, stating that the store is not just a retail outlet but a symbol of hope and transformation. By offering a platform for inmates to display and sell their products, the initiative actively contributes to their rehabilitation and reintegration into society, providing them with a second chance in life.

Products and Services

The Convenio Store, located at the company-owned company-operated IOCL filling station at Masjid Moth in south Delhi, offers a diverse range of products crafted by Tihar Jail inmates. These include clothes, imitation jewellery, bakery and confectionery items, candles, soaps, and furniture. Once released from jail after serving their sentences, the inmates will be responsible for selling these products.

Vocational Training Programs

In addition to the retail outlet, Tihar Jail offers various vocational training programs to inmates, empowering them with skills that can help them earn a livelihood after their release. These programs include carpentry, weaving, papermaking, baking, hair cutting, and refrigerator/air conditioner repair, among others.

Hathkargha Unit for Women Prisoners

During the inauguration, Lt Governor Saxena also launched a Hathkargha unit in jail number 6 specifically for women prisoners. This unit provides skill training in the fields of Hathkargha and Hasthashilpa, empowering women inmates with valuable skills that can contribute to their economic independence upon release.

The Convenio Store and the Hathkargha unit represent significant steps towards the rehabilitation and reintegration of Tihar Jail inmates. By providing opportunities for skill development and market exposure, these initiatives empower inmates with the means to earn a livelihood and successfully transition back into society after their time in jail.
