Tight security cover for counting at Chennai

Chennai, May 15: About 25,000 police personnel and Home Guards will be deployed for security in Chennai and its suburban areas coming under Greater Chennai police limits for tomorrow's counting of votes in three Centres.

City Police Commissioner JK Tripathy was overseeing the arrangements and each of the three counting Centres for North Chennai, Central Chennai and South Chennai will be manned by police teams led by an Additional Commissioner of Police, an official release here said. Votes for the three constituencies will be counted at Queen Mary's College for Women, Loyola College and Anna University,respectively.

As part of the three-tier security ring for counting centres, Central paramilitary forces will guard the rooms containing the EVMs followed by Tamil Nadu Armed Reserve police and local police, it said adding each counting centre will be guarded by some 800 police personnel. Security has been beefed up in offices of political parties and areas where people move in large numbers even as video surveillance would also be in place. A 24-hour vigil of the city was on and lodges and places of accommodation were being checked while patrolling has been increased, it said.
