Three Former BJP Legislators Join Jharkhand Mukti Morcha Ahead of Assembly Elections

Three former BJP legislators, Lois Marandi, Kunal Sarangi, and Lakshman Tudu, along with other leaders from the party, have joined the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM). This shift occurs just weeks before the state assembly elections. The move follows the recent joining of three-term BJP legislator Kedar Hazra and AJSU Party leader Umakant Rajak to JMM.

Ex-BJP MLAs Join JMM Before Elections

Lois Marandi, who defeated Chief Minister Hemant Soren in Dumka by 5,262 votes in 2014, has now embraced JMM. Hemant Soren welcomed her warmly into the party. "We heartily welcome former BJP Vice President and senior leader respected Lois Marandi Ji to JMM family," Soren posted on X. In 2019, Soren won Dumka by 13,188 votes but retained Barhait after vacating Dumka.

Political Shifts Ahead of Elections

Kunal Sarangi, a former BJP spokesperson and ex-Baharagora MLA, confirmed his switch to JMM. He had resigned from BJP's primary membership in July after stepping down as Jharkhand unit spokesperson. Sarangi cited organisational issues in East Singhbhum district and expressed disappointment over the party leadership's indifference to his concerns.

Sarangi stated, "I resigned from the spokesman's post hoping that the party leadership would address the concerns I raised, but nothing has happened yet." His resignation letter was sent to BJP Jharkhand unit president Babulal Marandi. Sarangi highlighted various organisational and people-oriented issues in his letter.

Electoral Dynamics in Jharkhand

Lakshman Tudu had previously defeated JMM's Ramdas Soren in Ghatshila by 6,403 votes in 2014. Other BJP leaders from Seraikela, including Ganesh Mahli, Basco Besra, and Bari Murmu, also joined JMM recently. These changes come as elections for the 81-member Jharkhand assembly are set for November 13 and November 20.

The filing of nominations for the first phase began on Monday with three nominations submitted so far. In total, 2.60 crore electors are eligible to vote in these elections. The counting of votes is scheduled for November 23.

Internal Party Dynamics

Lois Marandi addressed a letter to BJP state president Babulal Marandi highlighting neglect towards committed workers like herself and rising factionalism within BJP. She noted that BJP won Dumka for the first time since Independence in 2014. Her brother Basant Soren later defeated her by over 6,842 votes in a bypoll at this JMM stronghold.

The political landscape in Jharkhand is witnessing significant shifts as key leaders realign themselves ahead of crucial elections. These developments could impact the electoral outcomes as parties prepare for upcoming polls.
