Three arrested in J&K with poppy, cannabis: Why are these illegal?
Cannabis and illegal sale of opium is banned in India.
The police on Monday said Three persons were arrested and more than 16 kg of poppy and cannabis in Udhampur and Kishtwar districts of Jammu and Kashmir.
The poppy was seized last evening after a police team from the Udhampur police station laid a checkpost on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway following a tip-off about the contraband being carried in a vehicle, said a PTI report.
The police party intercepted a car, and during the search 16 kg of poppy was recovered from two people travelling in the vehicle, a police official said. Rakesh Kumar and Riaz Bhatti were arrested on the spot and vehicle seized, he added.
In another seizure, the police conducted special checks at a bus stand in Kishtwar onj Sunday where they detained one person after 200 grams of cannabis was recovered, he said. Investigation in the two cases are on.

Cannabis is a banned substance in India and the person possessing it can be booked under sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
