Lucknow, July 26: Call it bizarre or tragedy of our times, every day a member of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has to say something so weird that we pray to become deaf than to tolerate such horrendous remarks by political leaders.

Uttar Pradesh BJP Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Surendra Singh notorious for making provocative and bizarre remarks has once again stoked controversy. Singh stated that every Hindu couple must have at least five children for Hindutva to remain intact.

Singh, in an interview to ANI, said this step is necessary to increase the population of Hindus in India.

"The population of Hindus must increase. It is the desire of every spiritual leader (mahant) that every Hindu couple should have five children to maintain India's strength and keep Hindutva intact (Hindu ki abadi badhani chahiye. Har mahant ki iccha hai kam-se-kam 5 bacche, Hindu jugal kam-se-kam 5 bacche paida kare to Bharatiya taakat bani rahegi, Hindustan mein Hindutva bana rahega: BJP MLA Surendra Singh)," Singh was quoted as saying by ANI.

In order to grab eyeballs, Singh has been regularly making controversial remarks. As the nation is witnessing alarming rise in rape incidents, the BJP MLA stated recently that even Hindu Lord Ram also can't stop rapes.

Earlier, Singh had said that prostitutes are better than government officials. He made the statement after he asked his supporters to give officials a "ghoosa" (punch) if they ask for "ghoos" (bribe).

Singh is the same BJP leader who had earlier called West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee "Surpanakha", the sister of demon king Ravana in Ramayana. He added that West Bengal could turn into Jammu and Kashmir from where Hindus had to migrate.

According to Singh, the country is witnessing rise in rape cases because of mobile phones. He also blamed parents for rising crimes against children as they let their wards "roam around freely".

Once while dismissing the report of a rape in Uttar Pradesh, Singh had said, "No one can rape a mother of three children."

Singh is not the only one who is making provocative, abusive and absurd statements from the BJP camp. Of late, every other day a BJP leader issue controversial statements--be it in the matter of mob lynching, beef eating, science, religion, women or minority communities.

In fact, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in order to rein in his erring lawmakers, had issued a warning a few months ago. Modi said, "We make mistakes and give masala to the media... as if we are great social scientists and experts to analyse issues..."

The PM warned lawmakers and said not to "talk out of turn...it hurts the party image."

But it seems no one in the BJP takes the PM seriously as the leaders of the saffron party continue to make provocative statements. The latest statement by Singh has been lambasted by activists, political observers and public in general.
