The new Rs 200 denomination notes will be introduced tomorrow. A specimen of the new note will be introduced tomorrow by the Reserve Bank of India. It would be in circulation from the month end or early September.

This would be the fourth note to be introduced since the decision on demonetisation was made in November 2016. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had in November announced that the Rs 500 and 1,000 notes would no longer be legal tender.

All the new currency introduced since then have high-end security features. The Rs 200 note that will be in circulation too has high-end security features.

Features of the new Rs 200 note:

  • Number panels of the notes are printed in fluorescent ink. The notes also have optical fibres. Both can be seen when the notes are exposed to the ultra-violet lamp.
  • The new Rs 200 note is also likely to have a colour-shifting windowed security thread with the inscription 'भारत' (India), RBI and Rs 200. The Rs 2000 notes have a motif of India's Mars orbiter, the Mangalyaan on the reverse which is likely to be seen in the new Rs 200 notes too.
  • For visually impaired, raised printing of Mahatma Gandhi portrait, Ashoka Pillar emblem is likely to be seen in the new notes.
  • Denomination numeral in Devnagari
  • The small floral design printed both on the front (hollow) and back (filled up) of the note in the middle of the vertical band next to the Watermark has an accurate back to back registration. The design will appear as one floral design when seen against the light.
  • Mahatma Gandhi portrait and electrotype watermarks. All banknotes contain the Mahatma Gandhi watermark with a light and shade effect and multi-directional lines in the watermark window.
  • On the obverse side of Rs.2000, Rs.500, Rs.100, Rs.50 and Rs.20 notes, a vertical band on the right side of the Mahatma Gandhi's portrait contains a latent image showing the respective denominational value in numeral. The latent image is visible only when the note is held horizontally at eye level. The Rs 200 note is also believed to get the same feature.
  • The portrait of Mahatma Gandhi, the Reserve Bank seal, guarantee and promise clause, Ashoka Pillar Emblem on the left, RBI Governor's signature are printed in intaglio i.e. in raised prints, which can be felt by touch, in Rs 20, Rs 50, Rs 100, Rs 500 and Rs 2000 notes. The new note may also be in circulation soon with all these features.
