Theatre Actor Bimbadhar Gouda Arrested for Animal Cruelty During Ramayana Performance in Odisha

A theatre actor, aged 45, was detained for a shocking act during a Ramayana play in Odisha's Ganjam district. The actor, Bimbadhar Gouda, portrayed a demon and tore open a live pig's stomach on stage, consuming its meat. This incident, which occurred in Ralab village under Hinjili police jurisdiction on November 24, led to widespread outrage and condemnation in the state assembly.

Statewide Outrage and Condemnation

The event drew criticism from ruling BJP members Babu Singh and Sanatan Bijuli in the assembly. They strongly denounced the act. Videos of the incident circulated widely on social media, prompting animal rights activists to demand strict action against those involved. The police arrested both Gouda and one of the play's organisers for animal cruelty and violating the Wildlife Protection Act.

Berhampur Divisional Forest Officer Sunny Khokar stated that they are also searching for individuals who displayed snakes during the performance. "We are also looking for THE persons who displayed snakes in the theatre. They will also be arrested soon," he said. However, Khokar did not reveal the name of the organiser who was apprehended.

Violation of Wildlife Guidelines

The state government had previously issued guidelines in August last year prohibiting public snake displays, even by certified handlers. Despite this, snakes were showcased to draw an audience during the play. Inspector-in-charge Srinibas Sethy from Hinjili police station confirmed Gouda's arrest, stating, "We have registered a case against the theatre actor who killed the pig and ate its meat in the theatre, and arrested him."

The gruesome act involved tying a live pig to the stage ceiling before Gouda used a knife to cut it open and consume some organs publicly. This performance was organised by villagers as part of Kanjianal Yatra celebrations.

The incident has highlighted issues surrounding animal rights and adherence to wildlife protection laws. Authorities are continuing their investigation to ensure all responsible parties are held accountable.
