Rahul's conviction: What’s the case all about!

A court in Surat convicted Congress leader, Rahul Gandhi over his comments on the 'Modi' surname.

A defamation case had been filed against Rahul Gandhi following his 2019 comments on the 'Modi surname.

Rahul Gandhi had said, "how come all thieves have Modi as the common surname?" Following this, BJP MLA and former Gujarat minister, Purnesh Modi and filed a complaint against Rahul Gandhi, who is also an MP from Wayne.

The remarks were made by Rahul Gandhi while addressing a rally in Kolar, Karnataka.

In his complaint, Purnesh said that Rahul Gandhi had insulted the entire Modi community by saying, "how come all the thieves have Modi as the common surname.?"

Following the complaint, the Congress leader was booked under Sections 499 and 500 of the Indian Penal Code which deal with defamation.

During his speech, Rahul Gandhi had also said, "the name Modi symbolises the collusion between India's biggest crony capitalist and the Prime Minister of India.

Surat's Chief Judicial Magistrate, A N Dave had told the media in 2021 that Rahul Gandhi had denied the allegations that he had made defamatory remarks against those who are named Modi.

Rahul maintained in court that he is an opposition leader and it is his job to question the government and the leaders on corruption and unemployment.

During the course of the hearing the complainant also produced two eye-witness to prove his point. The Kolar district collector and the videographer also recorded their statements before the court.

The hearing in this case resumed after the Gujarat court vacated the stay on Rahul Gandhi's personal appearance in the court.

Prior to the verdict, Congress spokesperson, Manish Doshi said that they believe in the judicial system. He alleged that no matter how hard the BJP tries to silence their leader, they will come back stronger.
